Police are seeking public assistance to understand how a truck driver died in a single vehicle crash between Coonabarabran and Gilgandra on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the Newell Highway at Gowang, about 30 kilometres south-west of Coonabarabran at about 2.15pm on Saturday 9 March 2024, after reports a B-double semi-trailer combination had left the roadway and struck a tree.

The truck caught fire and the driver died at the scene.

Officers from Orana Mid-Western Police District established a crime scene and an investigation is now underway into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The identity of the driver was not initially released.
