This weekend police have taken to the roads in a state-wide traffic operation targeting drug and alcohol related driving road offences and general road compliance.
The two-day operation follows the hearing into safety on regional roads this week, which found safe driving on regional roads to be difficult to enforce.
Beginning yesterday and running until midnight tonight, the high-visibility operation will see both Highway Patrol Commands as well as local police on the roads, utilising local knowledge of roads.
Operation Fume follows a recent spate of fatal crashes across the state, including the death of five teenagers earlier this week.
While speeding and other illegal behaviour will be watched closely, drug and alcohol road offences will be a target of the operation.
In NSW, drink driving is responsible for 1 in every 7 crashes where someone loses their life.
Interestingly, almost 60 per cent of NSW residents surveyed believed all cars should be fitted with a device to check blood alcohol levels before being able to start the car, with women being far more in favour of the technology than men.
Police will remind the community of road safety and raise awareness of the contributing factor of alcohol and drugs in fatal and serious motor vehicle crashes.
