Praise for positive local policingTaking part in the Gilgandra Santa Fun Run, Constable Hayes made sure he was on Santa’s nice list!

Recently, Assistant Commissioner Brett Greentree visited sectors of Central North Police District, hosted by District Commander Timothy Chinn.

Calling into Walgett and Lightning Ridge, Assistant Commissioner Greentree praised the local officers.

“There is such a strong connection these Western communities. Police in these sector stations display true commitment to their towns and I am extremely proud of how they represent the NSW Police Force and Western Region," Assistant Commissioner Greentree said.

Assistant Commissioner Greentree and Commander Danny Sullivan also called into the Gilgandra Station where Sergeant Nick Campbell and the team are working hard for their local community.

Over Christmas, police from the Gilgandra sector participated in the annual Santa Fun Run with emergency service partners SES, fire services, ambulance.

The regular "lolly run" saw Father Christmas chauffered around on the fire truck, accompanied by decorated vehicles delivering lollies to excited children on the route through Gilgandra's streets.

Walgett and Lightening Ridge stations were two of the stations visited by Assistant Commissioner Greentree, hosted by District Commander Timothy Chinn just before Christmas.

With the knowledge that crime doesn’t take a holiday, the Orana Mid-Western Police District have offered crime prevention tips for locals over the Christmas period.

The school holidays sees children spending more time online and online safety is vital. Avoid sharing too much information on social media about your movements and gifts from Santa that may make your possessions a target.

On the cyber front, police say it is important to make sure your devices are protected against malware and viruses by installing the latest updates and running up-to-date anti-virus software.

While the excitement of unwrapping gifts is over, it is recommended to not pile up bulky gift boxes in your recycling bin for a passer-by to see. Offenders appreciate knowing that you have expensive gifts inside for them to steal so break the boxes down or cut them up to better conceal the items.

When it comes to your personal safety, always be alert and aware of your surroundings and act on your instincts.

Always tell your family and friends of your travel plans and provide them with your itinerary so they know where you are and how to contact you in an emergency.

Any suspicious activity can be reported to the police; in an emergency or when a crime is taking place call 000.

If a crime has already happened call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.

For anonymous reporting call Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or nsw.crimestoppers.com.au.
