An apprentice jockey known to the Western Plains sporting community is being remembered for her good nature and enjoyment of race riding.

Bronte Simpson, just 24, lost her life when her SUV left the highway and hit a tree about 80km north-west of Dubbo near Mendooran on 22 December.

Her last win was at Warren on 12 December.

She was apprenticed to Mendooran trainer Jane Clement.

Emergency services were called to the Castlereagh Highway at Mendooran, about 9.15pm (Monday 22 December 2025), after a passing motorist saw the crashed vehicle.

Passers-by assisted the driver; however, the woman died at the scene.

Officers attached to Orana Mid Western Police District will prepare a report for the information of the coroner.

Tributes have poured in for Ms Simpson.

Gilgandra-born Sky Racing expert Kiarn Dickens said while hosting a race meeting at Bathurst, ‘’We are in grief, this is hard to fathom."

“To her parents and partner we share our deepest condolences."
