Regional CBA branch hours reducedSeveral Commonwealth Bank of Australia branches across regional Australia will have their opening hours reduced from next month, prompting criticism from local councillors.

Mayors from several regional NSW towns have expressed their disappointment over the announcement that their local Commonwealth Bank branches will reduce their operating hours from next month.

From Monday 13 September, 90 CBA branches across regional Australia will only operate their tills from 9.30am to 1pm and then close to assist it's national contact centres.

CBA's Executive General Manager Customer Service Network Mark Jones said this would ensure the contact centres, which receive more than a million enquiries every month, would be further supported without fully closing their regional branches.

“Our branches in regional Australia will continue to play an important role in delivering great service to our customers now and into the future," Mr Jones said.

“We understand these changes may be an adjustment for some of our customers, and the team at their local branch will continue to be available to help them find the solutions that best suit their needs."

Across NSW, the regional branches that will have their operating hours reduced include the ones in Bourke, Cobar, Condobolin, Coonabarabran, Coonamble, Nyngan and Warren.

According to Mr Jones, CBA decided this was the best course of action to adapt their services to meet their customers' evolving needs while ensuring jobs stay in regional communities.

However, local councillors out in some of these regional communities claim that they still rely heavily on in-person banking.

Mayor of Warren Shire Council Milton Quigley said it was his belief that a big proportion of the local population have an account with the local Commonwealth Bank.

"I think there is a significant number of pensioners who use the Commonwealth Bank as their bank, so I imagine this would make life more difficult for them," Mayor Quigley said.

"There are also a lot of farmers and those outside the township who can only come in the afternoon after doing what they normally do in the morning.

"Having the branches only open in the morning really dictates for them what time to come to the shopping centre - it feels diminution of their services to all our community."

Mr Quigley was also worried about that older residents may not be able to adapt to using online banking as CBA believed and said he didn't understand why the branches couldn't remain open if the staff were remaining in the building.

Bogan Shire Mayor Ray Donald said he wasn't surprised to see the CBA branches cut their hours, seeing as the local NAB had already done so earlier in the year.

"It seems to be following a long trend of general bank cutback in rural areas - I'm not really aware how many people will be affected but some country people may not always be able to come in at the new hours," Mayor Donald said.

"I hope this isn't a forerunner to closing the branch altogether - we no longer have a local Westpac - which is always a possibility.

"The banks maintain that the number of customers coming to traditional services is lessening but I don't think that's relevant out here and therefore should be retained in regional towns."

According to Mr Jones, CBA has recently renewed its ongoing partnership with 3500 post office outlets through to 2032.

He said this would ensure both personal and business customers could still make withdrawals, deposits and bill payments during normal business hours.

According to both Mayors, the Nyngan and Warren Post Offices do offer these services.
