Rural charity Rural Aid has decided to reschedule its 'Our Towns' week in Brewarrina, due to the evolving COVID-19 situation preventing the majority of its volunteers from travelling to the town last weekend.

The 'Our Towns' program is part of Rural Aid’s Stronger Futures initiative which is designed to strengthen rural communities.

After an extensive application process, Rural Aid selected four towns in NSW - including the north-western town of Brewarrina - for the program.

Made possible by property investment and development company Holdmark, Brewarrina - along with the other successful applicants - has been awarded $100,000 to spend over the next five years to renew and revitalise the town.

Earlier this year, almost three dozen volunteers visited the nearby town of Walgett and spent a week working on a variety of projects throughout the town informed by a strategic plan created by local townspeople and a member of the Our Towns judging panel.

Dozens of volunteers were due to arrive in Brewarrina on Sunday 4 July to start this process all over again.

However, because many of them were based in Greater Sydney - which is currently in the middle of a stay-at-home lockdown due to COVID-19 - organisers decided to postpone the event.

Rural Aid CEO John Warlters said the safety of locals, volunteers and staff was the charity’s highest priority.

“The Rural Aid team is itching to get into Brewarrina and start community-building works, but we need to adhere to the COVID restrictions and ensure our staff, volunteers and the townspeople of Brewarrina are keeping safe,” Mr Warlters said.

Rural Aid staff who are currently in Brewarrina for the purpose of project planning have also had to put their efforts on hold.

The new date for the Brewarrina Our Towns event will now take place from Sunday 18 July to Saturday 24 July.

Rural Aid volunteers have been notified of the date change, though some are unable to attend between July 18th and 24th, prompting a call for other volunteers to replace them.

“Volunteering at an Our Towns week is a rewarding and memorable experience,” Mr Warlters said.

“Helping to transform a town, and make friends along the way, is what keeps our amazing volunteers returning time after time. I’d urge anyone who can lend a hand to please get in touch with the Rural Aid team.”
