Bohena Creek residents have been warned to seek shelter, as the Duck Creek Pilliga fire approaches and the risk is deemed too late to leave.

The Duck Creek Pilliga fire continues to spread, as north westerly winds are expected to move the fire in an easterly direction, threatening more land after already burning 64,700 hectares.

“If you are in the area of Bohena Creek, between McCanns Road, Perimeter Road, Tomlinson Lane and Newell Highway, you are in danger. Seek shelter as the fire approaches. It is too late to leave,” the RFS declared.

The advice to seek shelter comes after the warning was reduced to Watch and Act advice earlier this morning, with the threat to properties easing earlier this morning, before wind increased its risk once again.

It’s the second time residents of Bohena Creek have been urged to shelter.

The last few days saw the fire break the containment lines near Bibblewindi State Forest, letting the fire spread in an easterly direction and making firefighting efforts much more difficult.

As of 4.23pm this afternoon the fire was reported to have consumed 80,862 hectares.

While the spread is heading away from the Western Plains areas, the smoke in the air is being found across the region.

“Smoke from this fire can be seen across a broad area, from Coonamble to the west and Tamworth to the east of the fire, and as far south as Dubbo,” the RFS explained.

“If you have a respiratory condition which may be worsened by smoke, activate your health management plan and seek medical advice if necessary. Take precautions, such as staying indoors and closing windows.”

While the Duck Creek fire is currently one of the largest in the state, a total of 76 fires across the state mean that firefighting resources are spread thin across the state.

Despite the circumstances being declared too late to leave for Bohena Creek residents, an evacuation centre for residents affected by the Duck Creek Pilliga Forest Fire has been established at The Crossing Theatre at 117 Tibbereena St, Narrabri.

The Newell Highway between Oxley Highway and Kamilaroi Highway (Coonabarabran to Narrabri) remains closed in both directions.
