Street fights take centre stage in Coonamble

Domestic violence may be on the downturn in Coonamble but recent bouts of public brawling have sent police and community members searching for solutions.

Just after 11am on Monday 23 October a man was assaulted and wounded with a knife during an altercation in the parking area of a premises at 63 Aberford Street, Coonamble.

The victim was treated by paramedics and later taken to Coonamble Multipurpose Health Centre after sustaining a laceration to his arm.

The area outside 63 Aberford Street was sectioned off by local police who entered into an investigation.

An eyewitness account of the incident revealed the incident was likely planned.

They told the Coonamble Times a group of men had engaged in a verbal argument in the parking area outside the supermarket.

It then escalated into a physical fight with "many" punches thrown before one of men slashed the arm of another with a knife.

One of the men then ran into a nearby supermarket with the knife in an attempt to hide it. Police later found the weapon stashed away in aisle four.

In the week following the knife attack, three men involved have been arrested and charged with affray.

One man was bail refused, one received bail but is unable to enter Coonamble, and the third is on bail but is not allowed to approach victims of the assault.

Women in street brawl

"Several groups of people brawling" in Coonamble in the early hours of Sunday 29 October gave local police an unpleasantly busy weekend.

Just after midnight on Sunday a series of fist fights involving multiple women at different footpath locations on Tooloon and Namoi Streets in east Coonamble were captured on video, showing footage of a night out that turned ugly.

A report from NSW Police states that "officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District were patrolling Tooloon Street, Coonamble, when they sighted several groups of people brawling outside a licensed premise."

"Police dispersed several groups and there were no reports of injuries."

Video footage recorded by witnesses show two different fights over the course of the night.

In one altercation on the corner of Namoi Street and Tooloon Street, two females grabbed on to each other before throwing numerous punches in front of a crowd of tens of people.

Police intervened and broke up the fight sending the two their separate ways.

Further footage showed another fight, this time further north up Namoi Street where two women engaged in a tussle, grabbing on to each other and punching numerous times.

Police again intervened to stop the fight.
