Nyngan High School students took time out of their busy learning schedule last week to add a shine to Nyngan main street businesses in a youth-driven effort to give back to the local community.
The group of students from years 7 – 12 , led by School Captains Shannon Bourke and Jack Buchanan, walked along washing windows on Pangee Street, as part of the Nyngan High School Student Voice which promotes community engagement within the school.
Not for profit organisations and abandoned buildings were the recipients of the students' efforts as they made their way systematically along the street, rolling up their sleeves, washing and polishing.
“This is such a wonderful initiative,” said Wendy Beetson from Red Cross - Nyngan Community Hub. “It is a visible way of demonstrating community spirit and a great way to show students interacting with the community in a positive way."
“It was fantastic to see the smiling kids through the windows and the school would have been most proud of the way they worked and conducted themselves.”
Under the care and guidance of Teacher Jarred Casley and leadership of Shannon and Jack, the students have been working on ways to give back to those who have given so much to them.

Unfortunately, COVID put a stop to plans the students had devised previously which included work in the Nyngan Museum, Nyngan Multi -Purpose Centre and Mick Glennie Hostel, and they are eager to catch up on what they missed out on.
Mackillop Care was one of the businesses given some TLC and is one of the many not-for-profit organisations that underpin the Nyngan Community.
“I was thrilled with the great job the Nyngan High School kids did cleaning the Mackillop windows,” said Marina Linke of Mackillop Care. “They not only cleaned the windows but the surrounding tiles. The front building has never looked so good."
"Thank you so much Nyngan High – you really brightened my day,” said Mrs Linke.
NHS students put some love back into the Community Hub.
Nyngan High School Principal Benn Wright said “I am very proud of the community-minded students who are leading NHS’ Student Voice - they are an asset to the Nyngan community.”
“I would like to thank them for taking the initiative to help others out and I hope Student Voice continue to develop pride and a sense of belonging in the community in which they live, “he said.
This feel-good project has shone a light on the true spirit of small towns and the High School is thrilled with the outcome and looks forward to many more successful projects around the town.
