The lights go out in WeilmoringleWeilmoringle residence getting ready to go on the SES boat

As Brewarrina shire became isolated from the outside world the satellite community at Weilmoringle was experiencing their own dramas.

The community was already doing it tough as they had to travel over an hour to Goodooga to shop for supplies, or over an hour through floodwaters to Brewarrina for the nearest petrol station.

The journey to Brewarrina wasn’t easy, requiring a private vehicle to reach the Cato, travel by SES boat to cross the floodwater, SES transport to Barwon Four, and another boat to reach Brewarrina. There they would shop, fill up a jerry can with fuel, and do the journey in reverse.

On Sunday the 13 November Weilmoringle got hit with a huge storm the impact of which echoed across the flood-struck region.

The storm took out the region's power supply causing a loss of power for three days. The power outage made life even more difficult for the small community.

The loss of frozen food, the need to travel to get to a shop, and the limited availability of fuel meant the power outage had far greater implications.

Brewarrina Local Emergency Management Committee called on local organisations to help out Weilmoringle in their time of need.

Brewarrina Aboriginal Child and Family Centre (ACFC) responded to the call with donations from Food Bank and the NSW LALC’s.

Extra mosquito repellents were provided by Aboriginal Affairs and the State Emergency Service (SES), with Brewarrina Shire Council carrying out logistics for local transportation. The SES then called in their rescue helicopter which transported the emergency supplies to Weilmoringle.

“Our team here at Bre ACFC connected with Food Bank not too long ago to secure essential food boxes for our Helping Hand Program. With supplemental supplies from NSW LALC’s we were pleased to be able to provide emergency provision for each household in Weilmoringle," said Danielle Boney.

CEO John Reidy stated, Brewarrina LALC played an integral role pulling the services together.

“It was great to see the community come together in the space of a few hours. However, the emergency packs were simply that."

"We are currently liaising with FareShare (fareshare.net.au) who have donated additional fresh food supplies which will help the Weil community restock lost food, he said.

"These are currently being transported north to ‘Goondir’ in St George, via FareShare's transport team. We are organising for the team at Brewarrina Shire Council to get these supplies across floodwaters, from the north, in the next few days.”

Our hearts go out to the Weilmoringle community as they face the brunt of isolation and high cost of this flood crisis.
