Optus customers have been forced offline, after waking up to an Australia-wide phone service outage.

Despite still being disconnected, authorities have confirmed that Triple Zero phone calls from mobile services are unaffected if another carrier is available, however emergency services cannot be contacted by fixed-line (landline) networks.

Minister for Communications Michelle Rowland has urged Optus to communicate with their customers to keep them updated, through options such as broadcasting, radio and television.

“The impacts of this outage are concerning and has left many Australians feeling anxious,” Minister Rowland said.

“The Government has sought further information from Optus about this development and when they expect services will be restored.

The outage - which was first reported at 4am this morning - has reportedly impacted hospitals, banks, transport and businesses.

With many businesses reliant on telephone network connected EFTPOS for their transactions, there are concerns many will be forced to close until the situation is resolved.

Businesses that are operating have been urged by Minister Rowland to keep their receipts.

Optus said in a statement that they are working to fix the issue.

“We’re aware of an issue impacting Optus mobile and nbn services and are working to restore services as quickly as possible.”

“We understand connectivity is important and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

If you require communication, internet is often freely available at your local library (if it isn't impacted by the outage), while Telstra phone boxes offer free phone calls, with some offering free WiFi.

The cause of the outage is still unknown.

While local broadcaster ABC Western Plains seems to be having technical issues, ABC Central West has taken over broadcasting.
