A man and teenage boy will appear in court today (Friday 30 July) charged after officers were allegedly assaulted in the Bourke shire yesterday.

About 1.30pm on Thursday 29 July, officers attached to the Central North Police District attempted to arrest a man at the Alice Edwards Village, Bourke, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

Police will allege the 34-year-old man punched a senior constable in the face as he was being arrested.

During the arrest, police will also allege a 14-year-old boy smashed several windows of a nearby police vehicle with an iron pole and concrete.

Further police then arrived at the scene and arrested the teenager, who also allegedly spat at a detective sergeant while being arrested.

The two were taken to Bourke Police Station, where the older man was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (DV), use offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence, assault police officer in execution of duty – cause actual bodily harm, and resist or hinder police in execution of duty.

The teenager was charged with use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, use offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence, affray, destroy or damage property (two counts) and assault police officer in execution of duty without causing actual bodily harm.

They were both refused bail and scheduled to appear before Bourke Local Court and a children’s court today.

The teenager was then granted conditional bail to reappear before a children’s court on Monday 2 August.
