Walgett mayor calls for community together after another ugly incidentWalgett's popular local pool has again been the scene of unacceptable behaviour as the Mayor calls the community to come together.

Walgett mayor Jasen Ramien says he held several meetings Monday 20 October and is pleading with community to stay strong after another setback for community safety.

The mayor has repeated his call for Premier Chris Minns to visit following a second assault at the town’s swimming pool.

The Premier has not responded to his call.

"We ask everyone to stand with us in saying enough is enough," Mr Ramien said.

"This pool belongs to all of us, and it deserves to be a place of pride, not pain.

"Let’s work together to protect it — and each other.’’

The latest alleged assault was directed at swimming pool staff.

‘’It’s with genuine sadness that we talk about this again," a spokesperson for Walgett Shire Council said.

"Following another serious incident on Sunday October 19 at the Walgett Swimming Pool, where a lifeguard was physically assaulted by a member of the public and other staff were verbally abused.’’

As the weather heats up, Council has made the difficult decision to limit pool opening hours for the coming week.

From Monday, the pool will operate between 6 am to 8 am and 11 am to 3 pm daily.

"This is not a decision we wanted to make," a spokesperson said.

"The pool is one of our community’s most valued assets — a place for families, children and visitors to come together, to relax, to cool off, and to enjoy what our town has to offer.

"It should be a safe and happy space for everyone.’’

NSW Nationals leader Dugald Saunders has added his voice in calling for more direct action, saying communities are living in fear.

"In the past couple of weeks, a motel owner was stabbed in Moree, a mother had her car stolen after being threatened with a machete at a pool in Walgett, and a gang of youths carried out a home invasion, an armed robbery and a break and enter in one night at Kempsey and now this latest incident in Walgett.’’

Mr Saunders said it shows the horrifying reality of what regional residents are going through.

“Right now we have people literally barricading themselves inside their homes petrified to unlock the doors and windows, and Mayors writing to the Premier and begging him for help because this crisis is continuing to spiral out of control,” Mr Saunders said.

“At the centre of this is young ringleaders who are being let out on bail over and over again because Chris Minns is refusing to do anything, sending them a message that they can do whatever they want and get away with it."

Cr Ramien is calling for the community to come together and says council is exploring all their options to manage the situation.

“It’s heartbreaking that our staff — the people who show up every day to serve their community — are being subjected to abuse and physical assault.

"We simply cannot allow that to continue.

“The reality is, after what’s happened, some of our staff don’t feel safe returning to work, and we can’t open the pool without lifeguards.

"We’re doing everything we can to rebuild confidence and return to normal hours as soon as possible.” the mayor said.

A Council spokesperson said ‘’Council has a legal and moral obligation to ensure a safe work environment for our staff.

"The current behaviour of a small number of individuals is making that impossible people abusing and swearing at staff and demeaning them on social media.

"We simply cannot allow staff to continue working in an environment where they are being abused or assaulted for doing their jobs.’’

Council General Manager Andrew Brown said entry fees may have be to raised to hire security at the pool.

‘’We are also reviewing options to improve safety, including options such as increasing the entry fee to help fund on-site security.

"Moving forward, children under the age of 14 will only be admitted when accompanied by a parent, grandparent, or another responsible adult aged 18 or over.’’

It's understood charges are expected to be laid over the assault of the life guard who attempted to control abusive behaviour, it's alleged the father of a child punched him twice.

The life guard was helped by paramedics and later taken to hospital.

He had only recently began as a life guard.

Any instance of verbal abuse toward staff will now result in a ban, and any physical assault will result in a lifetime ban from all Council facilities.

Council have also expressed their gratitude to "the vast majority of our community who have supported our pool and treated our staff with kindness and respect.’’

Over the weekend Sydney’s Daily Telegraph headlined Walgett’s dilemma on its front page also focusing on Moree.

Will be it enough for the NSW Premier to meet with Walgett's community leaders?
