Parts of Walgett Community College Primary School have reopened after a fire destroyed parts of the building less than 48 hours ago (Monday 14 June).

The school has resumed for Kindergarten to Year Six classes, while the preschool continues to be not operational.

The fire, which is being treated as suspicious, destroyed the Birraleegal Goondi Preschool, primary school hall, library resources, sports and gymnastic equipment and two commercial ride on mowers.

“Arrangements are being made to support preschool students in alternative facilities, on site, with the expert coordination/consultation of appropriate agencies, as soon as possible,” Executive Principal Alison Finlayson said.

School facilities such as the canteen and toilets are unaffected by the fire.

“The Department is committed to rebuilding the school as quickly as possible,” Ms Finlayson said.

The Department of Regional NSW will work closely with the Department of Education and all other services to assist where needed, according to a statement from Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty.

“In the interim, we want to ensure learning can continue and we will support Walgett Public School and preschool to reopen under temporary operating plans as soon as possible,” the statement read.

“Students will receive targeted wellbeing and emotional support today and in follow up to this unfortunate event,” Ms Finlayson said.

The fire is a compounding blow to the community, with the town recently learning they may forego their pool during summer.

Investigations into the fire are ongoing by NSW Police.
