Warren Jockey Club are expecting a big crowd this Sunday. [IMAGE: WJC]Some of the biggest races for bush horses in Sydney are over for now but Warren’s time honoured Cotton Cup over 1600m has brought a top quality field for Sunday’s full Tab meeting. (November 10).
Race club president Paul Smith says the track regarded as ‘The Randwick of the West’ is in top order and tickets for buses to the track from Dubbo, Narromine and Nevertire have sold well.
‘’Fashions always popular here and we get fans from many areas," he said.
"It’s a 1.40pm start for the 7 races.’’
In the feature race, the Cotton Cup, Wayne Brown is back for a title defence this time bringing along Subuki.
Subuki has had five starts this prep and hit the placings a couple of times, the latest two at Gunnedah when running 5.1L 2nd in the Manilla Cup over the mile.
Subuki stepped up to the 2000 metres last start and had a horror run, stuck wide no cover and faded to finish 6th of 9 (beaten 7.6L). Now back to the mile (15:2-5-2) which will suit, making them a chance.
Dubbo and former Western Plains trainer Michael Mulholland will have two runners amongst the field.
He has solid form, placing in a BM58 at Muswellbrook two back and went home best at his last start at Coonabarabran to salute by 0.2 length with a further 2 lengths to 3rd. Had another win when resuming and could figure but leaning place hope only.
Epic Poem looks a great chance, coming in third-up (4:0-1-0) and loved the sharp improvement last start when running 3.6L 4th after sitting on speed in a BM82. Now third-up rising to the mile (7:2-1-1) plays right into his hand and gets 3kg off with the booking of Jacob Stiff. Will roll forward from barrier four, set a good speed and look to hold on, each way.
At the top of the weights is Geoff O’Brien’s Tainui. Started this prep well with a 0.3L 2nd over the 1200m at Tamworth in a BM82 affair and then headed to the Crystal Sprint on Coonamble Cup Day and just had to do too much work out front, fading to 6th (beaten 4.1L). Last start rose sharply to the mile and was found out late, finishing 12.6L off in 10th. Blinkers go off for the first time and finished top two in seven of ten starts. Will fight at the finish.
Mack Griffith’s Dawn County is flying this prep.
Three wins and six starts including winning back-to-back starts at Narromine and Muswellbrook two and three back, the latest a narrow win (0.1L) over the 1450m in a BM66. Couldn’t get going last start at Coonabarabran, settling last and passing a couple in the straight to finish 8th (beaten 9.8L).
Make your way to Warren on Sunday.
