The Western NSW Local Health District said it is taking seriously allegations of racism and mistreatment at the Bourke and Brewarrina multi-purpose health centres.

The Western Plains App understands that a Brewarrina elder has levelled some extraordinary claims about racism at the Brewarrina hospital during public hearings at the NSW Special Commission of Inquiry into Healthcare Funding in Dubbo last month.

She raised concerns about a relative who had dementia and claims the woman was mistreated.

The woman also said she had made complaints to the aged care commission.

Indigenous community leaders also spoke out about what they perceive as inadequate medical services at the Bourke Multi-Purpose Health Centre.

"Now, numerous times, I've tried calling around the table to come and have a meeting with us.

"The service provider, they don't acknowledge us, they don't want to come out to any meetings, and we've got the Royal Flying Doctors there.

"Now we've got an issue with the AMS, Bourke AMS and the Royal Flying Doctor Services, with shared information" a community leader from Enngonia told the Inquiry.

The woman said when indigenous people get sick in those communities "the ambulance takes nearly five hours to get out there, and it's bitumen all the way and it's only a one-hour drive.

"You know, our people, in the past ... they've been passing away before the ambulance gets out there".

"Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) takes all concerns raised about patient care incredibly seriously and investigates those concerns thoroughly" a spokesman said.

"We acknowledge the seriousness of the issues raised with the Commissioner during recent hearings for the Special Commission of Inquiry and are investigating these matters".

"It would not be appropriate to comment further on individual patient matters or matters related to the Special Commission of Inquiry while it is in progress".
