With the October long weekend drawn to a close, police have reported that one of the three deaths on NSW roads over the weekend occurred in Western NSW.
Drivers were warned in the lead up to the long weekend that police were out and about, and handing out double demerit points for traffic offences over the weekend period.
During Operation Labor Day, police issued 11,080 traffic infringement notices.
“Sadly, we lost three lives during this traffic operation - three too many,” Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said.
“Our officers have seen far too many drivers this long weekend driving dangerously and putting other motorists at risk, and it needs to stop.”
Across Western NSW, police issued 464 speed infringements, 19,178 breath tests, 55 positive road drugside tests and attended 24 major crashes with one fatality.
“Think about the consequences before you get behind the wheel and consider how your actions can affect other road users. Police will continue to target these drivers who engage in speeding, drink driving or other driving offences.”
According to police, one of the notable offences from the weekend occurred in Walgett, where the driver allegedly failed to stop travelling at 101km per hour in a 50km per hour zone.
The 18-year-old male driver exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot before being arrested.
He was charged with several offences, including not having a licence and not displaying the vehicle number plate correctly.
The man was granted bail to appear before Walgett Local Court on 14 November.
The double demerit period has concluded, with the next occurrence on Christmas Day.
“Despite the operation concluding, I’m still urging drivers to be careful on our roads and follow the rules,” Asst. Commissioner McFadden said.
Across NSW, there were 286 major crashes over the October long weekend period.
