Coming from far flung places has never made it easy for the Wiradjuri Goannas but they have won three Western Women’s Rugby League competitions in its nine year history.

Susanne Egan, Secretary of the Goannas, says it's all about their competitive nature and their season beginning was impressive at Dubbo’s Apex Oval Sunday June 15.

‘’Players come together from Walgett, Narromine and Forbes to play and they have great desire," she said.

"It was game one for us, Orange CYMS had played a match so they pushed us right to the wire."

Multi-skilled Sienna Sullivan who has played at the state level in rugby union scored the Goannas' only try in a torrid 4-all draw with Orange CYMS.

CYMS lost to Mudgee 12-8 in their opening encounter.

‘’We were will match fit and train on match day but they are combination of Bathurst Playtipi and Orange Vipers players, so they were hard to beat,’’ Susanne said.

The tackle competition is now on in winter and is played with grade matches in the Peter McDonald Premiership and games shortened in an aim to promote women’s tackle before bigger crowds.

‘’Not all players are happy with the transition to Summer and it has big opposition from Women’s League Tag,’’ Ms Egan said. "But there are more eye balls on the women’s game now.

"League Tag in the region is booming with players from 7 to 16 playing, it’s a big plus for the sport.

‘’Some mums and dads want their kids to play League Tag because it has little impact on their bodies and let's face it boys have stronger early strength to overcome tackle injuries.’’

The Castlereagh Cougars debut against the Goannas on June 22.

In the men’s Peter McDonald Premiership, Nyngan played out a thriller losing 20-18 to last placed Bathurst Panthers.
