Work starts on mobile service upgrade in Warren

Telstra says work is underway in Warren to provide better 4G and 5G service.

The telco said an upgrade to equipment at their mobile base station servicing the area began Tuesday on 3 March.

Telstra Regional General Manager Mike Marom said there may be disruptions for up to eight hours to mobile service over the next few days until work is scheduled to be completed on Friday 13 March.

“As data use over our mobile network continues to grow, adding extra 4G capacity to our mobile site in the area will help deliver faster downloads, smoother streaming and less congestion for customers," Mr Marom said.

"The work will also make the site ready for a further upgrade to our even faster 5G in the future.”

“While disruption is required while the upgrade is underway, we’ll only be switching off the site when we need to and will have it back online and working better than ever as quickly as possible."

Telstra said customers will receive texts advising of the upcoming work, while landline services, NBN internet services and mobile coverage from other providers will not be impacted.

Any calls to Triple Zero from a Telstra mobile when the site is off air will automatically connect to another mobile network if available.

Customers will also be also to use wifi calling to make calls and texts during disruptions.

Warren mayor Greg Whiteley said residents have been frustrated over a decline in service after the 3G network shut down in late 2024.

"Every second vehicle you see now, it's got a must little square Starlink box on the roof," Cr Whiteley said.

"We've got coverage in the town. That's fine. You just don't have to go that far any way to lose it

"Especially in our Nevertire region, it's been a lot worse."
