Veteran Western Plains trainer Dar Lunn pulled off a shock win on Saturday 2 August with his 6 year old Elson Boy in atrocious conditions with blinding rain at Rosehill.

The weather was so bad race caller Darren Flindell said he couldn't see the horses.

Unwanted by punters, Elson Boy jumped fast and against the might of premiership winning trainer Chris Waller and star millionaire jockey James McDonald it was always going to be a tough task.

But claiming apprentice William Stanley stole a margin off fast-finishing Captain Furaurai and was too good in barely visible weather.

For trainer Dar Lunn, who had mastered his training in Coonamble and Coonababran, it was a big win snaring $82,500 for first prize.

"Just an amazing bloke - he was good in bad weather," said Lunn.

Elson Boy started at 12 to 1 and scored the win by nearly two lengths.

In Cobar where the conditions were a little more favourable, Blackhall Kitty sealed her favourtism for the NSW Country Picnic Championship Final at Dubbo.

The mare dominated the Russell Trophy Handicap (1400m) giving her trainer Connie Greig 8 horses in the rich $100,000 final.

Jockey Todd Bailey had Blackhall Kitty positioned nicely and in the end she was too good, winning by a length.

Gilgandra trainer Keiran Hazelton began the day with his 5 year old mare winning easily. Ransom’s Girl with Ricky Blewett started favourite.
