Your Saturday dose - Western NSW covid updateDubbo pharmacist Kaail Bohm says that there are no issues with vaccine supply in the western health district

Up to 8pm last night there were 38 new cases identified in the Western NSW Local Health District, down from 53 yesterday. They are in the following Local Government Areas. 22 located in Dubbo, 9 located in Bourke shire area, 3 located in Bathurst, 3 in Orange, and 1 listed for Nyngan.

The case identified in Nyngan has since been determined to be in Dubbo however NSW Health's ongoing sewage surveillance program has recently detected fragments of the virus that causes COVID-19 at the sewage treatment plant in Nyngan.

At today's conference, questions around contact tracing were raised, especially how cases are sometimes notified in a location and then retracted.

"There were two cases reported as being in Walgett recently," said Dubbo MP Dugald Saunders. "It ended up that they were not at Walgett but they told tracers that they were."

"If you receive a call from contact tracers, it is not a matter of being interrogated," Mr Saunders said. "Be honest and open and we'll make sure we get through all of this together."

Of the 38 new cases at least 7 have been infectious in the community, and 5 of those for at least 2 days.

At least 18 cases are linked – 13 are household contacts, and 5 are linked to a cluster or known cas while 20 are under investigation.

There are 18 patients in hospital across the district, and of these 4 are in intensive care and 3 are ventilated.

The new cases overnight brings the total number of cases in the Western NSW LHD to 757 including 559 in Dubbo.

Weekend testing

Drive through testing is happening today at the Narromine showground up until 2.30pm.

Most other towns have closed their testing for the weekend and will re-open Monday but please call your local MPS/Hospital to check.

Vaccine supply not an issue

The WNSWLHD received an allocation of additional Pfizer doses this week to help us respond to emerging situation in our most vulnerable communities.

Speaking at today's press conference, Dubbo pharmacist and Wiradjuri man, Kaail Bohm says there is "no reason not to get a vaccine."

His own pharmacy has administered more than 1500 doses of Astra Zeneca in the past two weeks and he reiterated that there is plenty of supplies of vaccines available in the region.

"There's been a lot of mis-information and people talking about brands of vaccine," Mr Bohm said.

"At the moment in Australia we have access to two vaccines. My preference is to ask 'what can I get in my arm now and when can I get my second dose'?."

"I've jabbed my family members with both brands and I feel comfortable with that," he said.

Mr Bohm said that pregnant women are encouraged to get Pfizer and those who are immuno-compromised are better to get vaccinated than not.

He said he also gets asked about blood clots.

"Blood clotting is a serious risk but so is covid," Mr Bohm said.

"Blood clots are a serious issue but we know the symptoms, we have protocols in place, you'll be fine."

Mr Bohm said it doesn't matter where you get vaccinated - with a pharmacist, a GP or at a pop-up clinic.

"As clinicians, we don't care how people get vaccinated," he said.

"It's all about sharing the load, none of us care who's put the needle in your arm, it matters that you get that needle in your arm."

More than 72 personnel Australian Defence Force personnel in five teams are continuing to administer vaccines at pop-up, walk-in clinics across the District from this weekend onward. The full schedule can be found on the WNSWLHD website.

After the initial three-week, first-dose blitz teams will return to all areas visited to administer second doses over a second, three-week period.

There are also vaccination clinics at your local GP, AMS and some local pharmacies.
