A grander stand for Nyngan Racecourse Under construction

Two years ago, Nyngan Racecourse had a really grand-stand for everyone to gather to oversee each race at local race meetings.

Unfortunately, a windstorm hit and blew the roof away, and only now, nearly two years later, has work commenced on repairs, with hopes the work will be finished in time for the towns annual Anzac Day races.

According to Bogan Shire Council, it has taken this long for Council’s insurers to agree to appoint a contractor to undertake repairs, following a structural engineers report.

Thankfully work is nearly complete, however, because the roof was off for so long, the flooring has been damaged by other rain events. Council has submitted a further insurance claim to address this and are awaiting the outcome.

According to Nyngan Jockey Club Secretary/Treasurer Wendy Robb, the Club is keen for the much-loved grandstand to be completed.

“The grandstand is a great asset to the racecourse and Nyngan Jockey Club as it provides the best views trackside on race day,” said Mrs. Robb.

“It is an integral building for our patrons to sit, relax and watch the races and we are grateful that the roof has been repaired in time for this year’s race meeting.”

“The fantastic vantage point allows all to see the whole track and the shade for patrons to study the field in the shade with hopefully a cool breeze coming through.”

“Our Club is looking forward to seeing everyone being able to use this beautiful stand once again.”

With damage preventing racegoers from using the grandstand, the building is not exuding its normal elegance, charm and grace and Council hopes this will soon be a thing of the past.

Bogan Shire General Manager Derek Francis is keen to get all the repairs finished and the racecourse back on track for future generations of race enthusiasts.

“The Racecourse grandstand is part of our town’s heritage and is always a favourite gathering spot on race days. It’s very good to see that we’ve been able to preserve it for the future.”
