Baradine students step upHeidi Taylor and Indiannah Carey from Baradine are taking on the challenge of becoming rugby league match officials.

In a time when few are stepping forward to officiate rugby league games, two students from Baradine Central School are showing outstanding initiative.

Heidi Taylor and Indiannah Carey have embraced the challenge of becoming rugby league match officials - an often demanding but equally fulfilling role.

Currently, both girls are regularly seen running the sidelines in the Castlereagh League competition and are working towards their goal of becoming centre referees as they gain more experience and

confidence.

Matt Wesley, President of the Castlereagh League Referees’ Association, spoke enthusiastically about the girls' initiative.

“We’re thrilled to have Heidi and Indiannah join us," Mr Wesley said.

"They’re a great addition to our team, and we’ll be supporting them fully as they develop their skills.”

Balancing busy schedules, the girls are also involved in a variety of other sports including league tag, rugby union, netball, oz tag and athletics.

Their passion for sport is clear, and their motivation to referee is just as inspiring.

Indiannah said her interest in becoming a referee came about during a postive experience during a rugby match.

“I once played in a game where the referee was really kind and respectful, no matter how others treated him," she said.

"That stuck with me, and I want to be that kind of referee for someone else.”

For Heidi, the appeal lies in simply being part of the game she loves.

“I enjoy being involved in the footy and contributing to it.”

With strong support from their families, both girls are committed to learning and growing in their roles, and are excited about giving back to the sport they’re so passionate about.

Castlereagh League Chairperson, Chris Deighton, also expressed his support, urging the rugby league community to stand behind these young referees.

“It’s important that spectators, players, and club officials show respect and encouragement, not just to Heidi and Indiannah, but to all match officials," he said.

"These girls are setting a great example, and if they’re willing to give it a go, surely others can follow their lead.

“Refereeing is a fantastic way to be part of the greatest game of all.

"While it comes with its challenges, it also offers many rewards.”

Anyone interested in becoming a match official is encouraged to reach out to Castlereagh League Referees’ Association Secretary, Joe Ramage, at 0407 398 854, or contact their local rugby league

club.
