Brewarrina Jockey Club left to lick their woundsThere was no racing to be had in Brewarrina last Saturday

As racegoers woke up on Saturday 13 May for a day out at the Brewarrina Races, no one would have guessed that just a few hours later there would be no horse racing to be had in Bre.

A track inspection by a Racing NSW steward at midday confirmed around 100m squared worth of cracked track in the run-off area 170 metres past the finish line.

He declared the track too dangerous to race on just an hour out from the first race - as horses and jockeys were preparing and patrons were arriving.

Earlier that week on Tuesday 16 May the same steward was supposed to arrive for a track inspection but had to cancel due to scheduling constraints.

President of Brewarrina Jockey Club, Tim Slack-Smith, believes the cancellation was unwarranted.

"We used the same preparation process that’s been used for the last thirty years, and all these members who were involved said the track was immaculate," said Mr Slack-Smith.

"The surface cracking is controversial and subjective in itself."

"I had been in contact with him (the steward) and had sent him videos and photos of the track which he had no issues with."

The cracked area was in a "low impact area" and according to Mr Slack-Smith would not have been a danger to anyone.

"We could have fixed the cracks then and there we had the equipment," said Mr Slack-Smith.

"We also said we could section off the area so the horses wouldn’t run on it, by that point they're being pulled up."

"There's no way we would run a race meet unless we thought it was safe for the horses and the jockeys."

The Brewarrina cancellation is eerily similar to the situation at Marthaguy Races just weeks earlier on Saturday 6 May when cracking had been found in the track. [ Cracks cancel Marthaguy Races]

Brewarrina Jockey Club Secretary, Belinda Colless, says that the club will be formulating a response to the cancellation.

"A representative will be meeting with the executive of Country Racing, and sending a letter to the Minister for Racing," said Belinda.

"The track had been prepared the exact same, Racing NSW needs to show support for these meets."

"So watch this space, because we’re not going away quietly."

The Western Plains App is awaiting a response from Racing NSW regarding the event's cancellation.
