Cattle being transported had a close call after the rear trailer of a truck they were travelling on caught fire on the Kamilaroi Highway yesterday.

The incident occurred 30 kilometres outside of Walgett at around 10am.

Rescue services arrived at the scene shortly after.

All the cattle were saved and a vet was on site to attend to any potential injuries.

Traffic was closed off in both directions initially.

The westbound traffic opened again at 11am and eastbound traffic opened again 12:19pm.

The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, however, the Rural Fire Service believes the cause to be mechanical.
