Man charged over Gilgandra house fire

A man faced court yesterday after a Gilgandra home was allegedly deliberately lit.  

 

Emergency services were called to Gumble Street at around 8:30pm last Thursday following reports a house was alight. 

 

Police said a witness approached the home and spoke with another man in the backyard who was armed with a golf club and knife. 


 "The man in the backyard jumped the fence and began to chase the witness to his home before fleeing on foot," a police spokesperson said. 

 

"Fire and Rescue NSW attended the home and extinguished the blaze. 

 

"Officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. 

 

"No one was home at the time." 

 

Police were patrolling the Gilgandra area shorty after the incident when they located a 38-year-old man at the intersection of Wrigley and Strickland streets. 

 

The man was taken to Gilgandra Police Station and charged with: 

 

  • damage property by fire/exp over $15000 (DV) 
  • armed with intent commit indictable offence 
  • contravene prohibition/restriction in AVO (domestic) 
  • stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm (domestic) 
  • breach of bail. 

 

The man was refused bail on Friday and appeared at Dubbo Local Court, where he was formally refused bail to appear at the same court on Monday 5 August.
