Coonabarabran water restrictions liftedCoona residents will no doubt breath a sign of relief, although mayor Ambrose Doolan says not to be complacent

Water restrictions have been lifted for Coonabarabran more than seven month after Warrumbungle Shire put them in place.

The shire introduced restrictions in October 2023 after the Timor Dam about 14 kilometres from the the Coonabarabran township fell to 70 per cent capacity.

Although Warrumbungle Shire mayor Ambrose Doolan told residents not to let their guard down.

"Lifting the water restrictions in Coonabarabran is a great relief for residents," Cr Doolan said.

"While there are no longer water restrictions in any of the towns in the Local Government Area, we urge the community to remain mindful of water conservation practices.

"Conserving water supplies remains crucial to ensuring sustained availability, particularly during dry periods."

Residents can reduce water waste by checking for leaks, avoiding leaving taps running and timing their shower time according to smartwateradvice.org.

When restrictions increased to level two this March, residents could only water gardens and use hand held hoses, microsprays, drip systems and soaker hoses every second day from 6am to 9am and 6pm to 9pm.

The restrictions were triggered insufficient rainfall in the dam's catchment area along with a lack of sufficient flows in the Castlereagh River.

Level one restrictions in Baradine, Binnaway, Merrygoen, and Mendooran had already lifted on 29 May after recent rainfall across the catchment area, coupled with decreasing temperatures, created more consistent healthy flows within the Castlereagh River.

However, Coonabarabran remained on level two restrictions.

Local Joan Wilkin said the the lifting of restrictions were "encrouaging."

"I don't mind having water restrictions, but it's always good news. It's an indication that the body of water that we have to hand is adequate," she said.
