Local shires are raising awareness around the dangers of portable pools, highlighting a little known regulation.

Did you know that pools holding the depth of 30cm or more water, including portable and inflatable pools, require the same fencing as any other backyard pool?

"Fines for a non-compliant pool enclosure can be as high as $5,500," Gilgandra Shire Council advised.

Residents across the Western Plains are being reminded to make sure their pools, especially portable and inflatable pools, are properly fenced off.

While the majority of people are aware of laws around fencing inground pools, consideration for small, inflatable pools are not as well known.

Lachlan Shire Council’s Environment and Development Services Officer Andrew Hubbard warns of the dangers.

"As much fun as the pool is, it can also be a dangerous place, especially if there is no barrier to stop children from going for an unsupervised swim,” Mr Hubbard advises.

Portable and inflatable pools are a cheap way to keep cool but can also be a source of tragedy as they have the same drowning risk as permanent pools.

Tips from Lachlan Council to prevent a child drowning tragedy include -

· Have a compliant child resistant pool barrier that is used correctly and maintained regularly

· Ensure a responsible adult is always supervising children

· Teach children water familiarisation and swimming skills

· Learn CPR

“Take the time to check your pool is safe and complies with the law," Mr Hubbard said. "If residents need help with their swimming pool barrier we encourage them to contact Council and one of our qualified Compliance Officers will plan a visit to assess the pool and assist with certification.”

Gilgandra Shire Council pleaded a similar case.

"Kids can drown in silence, or suffer serious brain injury, if left unsupervised around water."

"Water left in kids wading pools can also breed bacteria and viruses making users ill. While these pools may seem like a cheap option, weigh up the risks for your family."
