Engine 142 gets a new lease on life Tamworth Club volunteers meet with Bogan Shire Mayor Glen Neill, General manager Derek Francis, Local Fire Captain Rob Avard and original member Keith White.

Nyngan's Garford Restoration Committee is all fired up following news that their Garford-Hale 15 Fire Engine will be restored under the loving care of the Tamworth Classic Fire Engine Club in an act of good will for its fellow ‘firies’ in Nyngan.

Following a chance meeting by Rob Avard, Nyngan’s Current Captain of the local Fire Brigade, with one of the Tamworth Club volunteers, a discussion took place about the treasured ‘Garford’ and the Tamworth members wasted no time in agreeing to take a look, making the trip last Thursday to check out the engine.

Following an inspection of the Engine, by four members of the group, it was decided to take on the restoration which should be completed in around 12 months-time.

The Tamworth Classic Fire Engine Club is made up of volunteers aged between 61-92 all who are retired fire fighters happy to bring the engine back to its former glory.

The Club members who have already restored 8 historic engines are made up of carpenters, mechanics and panel beaters combining talents to complete the important work.

The engine which served Nyngan from 1947 – 1961 was purchased by Jim Marr after its work was done and housed at “Illabunda’ until he donated it back to the Nyngan Community.

The Nyngan Garford Restoration Committee received a grant for the Engine restoration and also that of the Old Fire Station and got to work.

Under the tender hands of Brian Hodge, Toby Neill, Keith White and Bogan Shire Council staff, the engine was given new life, restored to running condition and given a new home in the Old Fire Station in Cobar Street.

The 1925 beauty was closely cared for by Nyngan Historian, Committee Secretary, and one of the original drivers, Keith White, who is overjoyed with the upcoming restoration.

“The Garford Fire Engine is part of Nyngan history and along with the refurbished1935 Fire Station is in my opinion very worthy of restoration,” said Mr. White

“When complete the Garford will be able to be used on festive occasions in Nyngan. My being part of the original Garford 12 fireman that helped extinguish fires over the years, I am extremely pleased that the Garford is now going to be fully restored.”

Local Fire Captain Rob Avard praised Mayor Neill, General Manager Derek Francis and Bogan Shire staff for their assistance with the mission.

“Bogan Shire Council have been very helpful in regards this project,” said Mr. Avard. “The Council will be transporting the Engine to and from Tamworth and have been great to work with,” he said.

“ We are so happy the project is moving forward and wish to thank all of those responsible for making it happy,” said Mr. Avard.
