Country music artist Andy Penkow has visited Coonabarabran enough times to know he wanted to write a song about it.

In his latest song ‘Aussie Rain’, he serenades the community he felt an instant connection with.

“I feel like it's one of those places where you can just walk down the street and say g’day to anyone, which really stuck with me,” Penkow said.

The music video, which was filmed in the town, features locals who were all keen to be a part of the project.

“We had a really great response, it was a lot of fun. We had some kids in there riding their bikes as well as the Imperial Hotel which has been a huge supporter of me for many years,” the singer said.

“The song actually references Bec who used to work behind the bar there, so yeah, the locals definitely got involved.”

Over three days, Andy and producer Duncan Toombs - who has directed music videos for Kasey Chambers and Lee Kernigan - made sure they could properly capture Coonabarabran, from the clock tower to the Macquarie River.

“Would you believe it actually rained on one of the days of shooting…I’ve now got the name ‘rainman’.”

Andy Penkow | triple j Unearthed

Andy Penkow has paid tribute to one of his favourite country towns.

With an album on the way, several local gigs nearby and in the midst of a national tour, it’s only Coonabarabran that received its own anthem.

“People are going to start expecting that from me.”

“The western parts of Australia I find such a ruggedly beautiful place, I reckon there would be a lot more inspiration out there for songs,” he said.

It seems to be a mutual affection between Coonabarabran and Andy Penkow.

“This song has been such a gift for me, I’ve had such an amazing response from it.”

“It’s so cool that the town has gotten behind me. I’ve had a lot of locals come out to a lot of the shows…it’s something I really wanted to write for them.”

Penkow’s next performance will be headlining Zoocoustics at Taronga Western Plains Zoo on 3rd September.
