Firefighters are still working to contain the blaze on the Sandstone Cave Walking Track near Dandry that broke out yesterday afternoon, Wednesday 26 February.

Stormy weather, including unpredictable winds, contributed to the fire quickly growing from 70 hectares to over 1,100 hectares.

There has been a drop in fire activity today, 27 February, according to a Rural Fire Service (RFS) spokesperson.

The spokesperson said just under 30 firefighters in 14 trucks from the RFS and Wildparks are attending the blaze.

Heavy machinery and aircrafts are helping contain the blaze.

The crews are working today on building containment lines on the east and west side of the highway to get the blaze under control.

The fire led to the closure of the Newell Highway in both directions between Narrabri and Coonabarabran Wednesday evening around 6pm.

All traffic can divert via Gunnedah using the Kamilaroi and Oxley Highway.

No properties are in immediate danger at the moment, although residents are urged to monitor the situation as it develops.
