Fire danger closes six local schoolsThe Department of Education will six small schools on Thursday 12 October

Six small schools with elevated bushfire risk in the western plains will be temporarily closed on Thursday 12 October 2023 due to extreme fire danger ratings being declared.

The decision was made by the NSW Department of Education in consultation with the NSW Rural Fire Service.

"The decision to temporarily close schools is not one that is made lightly," a spokesperson for the Department said. "It is always done with the safety and wellbeing of our staff and students in mind.

"Although the schools are temporarily closed tomorrow, students will be provided with learning from home resources.

"We encourage parents and carers to always follow the advice of Police and Emergency Services during periods of heightened bushfire risk."

The department say they will continue to update impacted schools and their communities on Thursday 12 October.

The temporarily closed schools are:

  • Warrumbungle National Park Environmental Education Centre
  • Tooraweenah Public School
  • Quambone Public School
