The Pilliga bore bath campsite has been temporarily closed, as the local council investigates illegal dumping of waste by campers.

While the bore bath will remain open, Narrabri Shire Council announced that the campsite would be temporarily closed after concerns were raised of public health and environmental issues in the area.

According to the council, waste from campers was dumped both around the campground and in the nearby creek area.

“Council will carry out water testing of the creek area and will look at introducing relevant measures to overcome this issue in future,” Narrabri manager of Parks and Open Spaces Evan Harris said.

Until testing has been completed, the campground will remain closed, with no timeframe for when it will reopen.

‘We take these matters very seriously, and your safety and protecting the beautiful Pilliga environment are our top priorities,’ a statement from the Narrabri Shire Council said.

‘We understand how much the Pilliga Bore Baths mean to our community, and we are committed to resolving these issues as quickly as possible to reopen the facility.’

In Australia, wilful or negligent disposal of waste that is likely to harm the environment carries penalties of up to $1 million and/or 7 years in prison for individuals and $5 million for corporations.

Illegal dumping can be reported by contacting your local council, or online at www.ridonline.epa.nsw.gov.au
