The power of community spirit was on full show last Sunday 17 December when around 300 people showed up to support a local legend.

Willy Redington was born and bred in Gulargambone, along with his sister Pam (Jones).

In 1980, after the sudden death of his father Jack, Willy took over the shearing contracting business, which he ran successfully for many years, mentoring many young shearers and shedhands.

In 2017 he joined Quality Wool as their territory manager, covering a huge area into Queensland from his base in Gulargambone.

He was a driving force in the community, including many years as a Gulargambone Lions Club member.

Willy was diagnosed just a few weeks ago with incurable brain cancer.

In an effort to support Willy and his family, Gulargambone rallied around them to organise a 'Wish for Willy' auction to raise money for the family.

One of the organisers Ian Lambell says the effort of the community to come out at such short notice was impressive.

"It was just a great community day," said Mr Lambell.

"It just goes to show how well respected and liked Willy is by the Gulargambone community."

"Hopefully we've made the end a bit more pleasant for him and the family."

Items were all donated by local businesses, families and friends with a total of 140 lots up for auction.

Steven Colwell and his helpers sold everything from lawn mowers and whipper snippers, to chemical, paintings and art.

The piece that topped the list however, was the final item.

Going for over $5,000 dollars, was a framed photo of Willy judging wool at the Gulargambone Show.

The tally from the auction was around $42,000 with a few thousand more coming in from direct donations.

All monies will be managed by Gulargambone Lions Club with the main aim of helping Willy and his children spend more treasured time together.
