Gilgandra Mayor Doug Batten has welcomed the installation of a new public electric vehicle (EV) charger, saying electronic vehicles will one day “just become the norm”.
In February the Gilgandra Region saw the installation of a new public EV fast charger located in the Gilgandra Cultural Precinct at the Coo-ee Heritage Centre.
The installation of the new public EV fast charger comes as part of the NSW Government program to deliver 25 more electric vehicle fast chargers to help deliver greener and cleaner travel throughout regional NSW.
This program also includes chargers at Nyngan, Cobar, Wilcannia, Broken Hill, Walgett, Brewarrina and Bourke.
Mayor Doug Batten told the Western Plains App the EV fast chargers are a welcome addition to Gilgandra.
“It’s the right place to put them, we are right on the Newell Highway so it makes a lot of sense” he said.
He said he hoped more tourists and visitors driving electric cars would stop and explore the whole region.

“While motorists are recharging their vehicles, travellers will have the opportunity to visit the Coo-ee Heritage Centre and its five newly upgraded galleries, pay a visit to the Rural Gilgandra Museum, or take a short stroll to the CBD along the Windmill Walk to check out our great cafes and range of specialty retail boutiques and giftware shops.”
“Council is thankful for the opportunity to work with NRMA on this project and welcomes all travellers to the Gilgandra Region.”
Gilgandra’s new public EV fast charger is made possible thanks to the NSW Government and NRMA, to help deliver greener and cleaner travel.
“It’s the way of the future. I am unaware of anybody with fully electronic vehicles in the region, but I know many people with hybrid models”.
“Soon it will just be the norm to have an electronic vehicle in all areas including rural areas” he told the Western Plains App.
