Three people are dead and their alleged killer remains on the run after a tragic afternoon unfolded in Lake Cargelligo.
Authorities have asked local residents to stay inside their homes, sending a geotargeted mobile phone message earlier this evening.
Emergency services were called to Walker Street, near Yelkin Street in Lake Cargelligo, following reports of a shooting at around 4.40pm this afternoon, Thursday 22 January.
Officers attached to Central West Police District attended the scene.
They say three people – two women and a man – have died.
Another man has been taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the circumstances of the incident has commenced.
The public has been urged to avoid the area and instructions are for local residents to stay inside.
There have been reports that the thief is travelling in a stolen vehicle belonging to Lachlan Shire Council.
