More from Bogan Medical CentreFederal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton, Bogan Shire Council General Manager Derek Francis and Deputy Mayor Victoria Boag at the opening of the Bogan Shire Medical Centre extension.

This week the Nyngan Medical Centre unveiled their almost $500,000 extension, hopefully opening the door to increased specialist services in the region.

The extension on the existing medical centre saw additional rooms created, allowing more space for ultrasound and pathology, as well as extra consult rooms.

Bogan Shire Council Mayor Glen Neill said with two permanent doctors for now, the extension is the next step forward to better health service.

“The rooms are to bring in specialists that might be available like skin clinics. We have had a heart specialist come on a regular basis, and extra space will hopefully encourage more of those services,” Cr Neill said.

The extension is an exciting marker for the medical centre, with the town having struggled with recruiting and retaining doctors since the original medical centre’s opening.

“At the moment we’ve secured two doctors for approximately the next 12 months and we’re over the moon with the people we’ve got. It’s a battle, and it’s one that every country town is facing at the moment,” Cr Neill said.

Member for Parkes Mark Coulton helped open the extension, saying that the services would fill a gap in the provision of health services to the local community.

“It’s so important that our regional communities have access to medical services locally, to keep people in town and limit the amount of travel required for treatment,” Mr Coulton said.

“Delivering better health care also enhances the liveability of the region, and will encourage medical and other professionals to consider making the Bogan Shire home.

The project supported three jobs during construction and will support another five ongoing roles on completion, and was funded through the Australian Government Building Better Regions Fund and the Bogan Shire Council.
