Nyngan Town Hall was awash with splendour last Saturday as Nyngan Garden Club hosted their annual ‘Flower Show’.
Despite the continuing inclement weather, there were over 170 entries in the Show, slightly down on last year’s event but organisers were pleased with the quality of blooms entered.
“We had a successful 2022 Flower Show,” President Mary Burley said. “Considering the weather, we were really pleased with the entries, we introduced a new section, best decorated bike which saw some lovely entries, it was a great day.”
“The Garden Club has been running for 12 years and currently has 55 members, with 30 plus regularly attending our monthly meetings,” said Mrs. Burley.
“These meetings are held in members gardens, where we have a short meeting followed by a BYO lunch and leisurely wander around the garden and then we just sit and enjoy the garden, and each other’s company,” she said.
The Club was formed to allow its members to meet regularly and talk gardens, look at gardens, swap cuttings and plants and socialise together. You don't have to be a gardener or have a garden to join - you can just enjoy looking at gardens and flowers.
The Nyngan Garden Club has a reputation for brightening up their community in more ways than one and their passion is obvious in all the events they run and support.
The Club has been raising funds for Angel Flight & Little Wings for over 10 years now, through the proceeds from Christmas Markets and 200 club.
“We initially chose Angel Flight because we knew of local children using the service regularly to attend medical treatment in Sydney and we had a local pilot who volunteered his services and plane, Mr. Ryan Heggie. When Little Wings also started helping locals, we decided to split our funds raised between the two. We donate $1,000 for each annually from our 200 club,” Mrs Burley said.
The Clubs other main fundraiser for the year is the Biggest Morning Tea held in Davidson Park in May, where all proceeds from sale of cakes, cups of tea and coffee and plant sales are donated to the Cancer Council, in a nod to all those they know who are battling the disease.
As usual the sections were hotly contested with several locals coming up trumps in Championship sections.
Most Successful Exhibitor for the day was Mrs. Di Donald. Mrs. Dawn Meldrum won the Champion Bike.
Champion Rose went to Di Donald, Champion Cut Flower, Lorraine Hawley for her Hippeastrums, Champion Pot to Molly Thompson for a beautiful pelargonium in a pot, Champion Decorative and Floral Art - Di Donald for her Mantle Arrangement of native flowers.
Tayla & Lily Maber won the prizes in the Children's Section.
The Garden Club ladies are already busily planning next year’s event to be bigger and better than ever.
