Off-duty senior constable charged with break-in

Two men have been charged after they allegedly forced their way into the home of an elderly man in Lightning Ridge, tied him up, and stole $100,000 in cash.

One of the alleged intruders was identified as an off-duty senior constable attached to the Southern region.

The incident occurred around 7:30 pm on 3 October. Police attended the property after reports of a break-in.

Paramedics tended to the 78-year-old victim at the scene and took him to the Lightning Ridge Hospital in a stable condition.

On 24 October, officers arrested the 36-year-old police officer and a 51-year-old man.

Earlier that day, officers had executed a search warrant at two homes near Lake Illawarra seizing several items related to the investigations.

Both men were taken to the Lake Illawarra Police Station where they were charged with aggravated breaking and entering and committing a serious indictable offence.

They were refused bail and were scheduled to appear before Wollongong Local Court on 25 October.

The officer's employment status is currently under review by the Professional Standards Command.

The victim has since returned home and is in a stable condition
