Nyngan cancer fundraising group 'Can Assist' is set to benefit from an injection of funds via a donation of a different kind and it’s not a rubbish idea.

The local branch, which has been in operation for almost 12 years, is run by volunteers who spend much time fundraising for cancer patients in the area, to help them with money, vouchers and accommodation as they navigate treatment and appointments.

Recently Bogan Shire Council opened a recycling shed at the Nyngan Waste and Resource Management Facility (local tip) and a vote by councillors saw a decision made that money raised by the shed would go to the local Can Assist branch.

Nyngan branch President Lyn Webster, is pleased about the initiative and the help it will provide to locals.

“The Bogan Shire has always been supportive of Can Assist as they know all of the funds raised stay within the Bogan Shire.

“Every donation counts and goes to helping out local people undergoing cancer treatments, so the funds from the tip shop will be much appreciated,” she said.

The purpose-built shed on site is a depot for goods deemed 'too good’ for landfill. Community members are able to visit the shed during opening hours to source handy items which would otherwise take up valuable space in waste cells.

There is already a collection of bicycles, lawnmowers, eskies, furniture and sporting equipment which may be of use to someone.

Community members who find something they’d like to take can make a donation of an amount of their choosing to the Nyngan branch of Can Assist as payment. There are QR codes on site to direct you to the Can Assist donation account.

The public have been urged to think about any of their home items that could be re-homed to take them to the Nyngan Waste Facility, noting that - as with all deliveries to the site – they will need to use a voucher or make an eftpos payment to drop it off.

The Council asks that if the goods are saleable through the local opportunity shops (for example, clothing) you choose that option.

Bogan Shire Council General Manager Derek Francis is pleased with the positive response to the Council decision.

“The tip shed is great for so many reasons. Apart from doing something positive for the environment by recycling instead of sending things to landfill, it also saves Council (and therefore ratepayers) money by extending the life of the landfill,” said Mr. Francis.

“The cost of excavating landfill space is significant and everything we can keep out of the hole extends its lifespan.

“We didn’t want to handle cash out at the Waste Facility for security reasons and - as mentioned above - the primary aim of the shop is not to raise revenue for the Shire. With this in mind Councillors agreed to donate money to the local Can Assist by way of a simple QR code displayed at the shop,” he said.

Community members who do not wish to use QR codes and internet banking can make a cash donation to Can Assist at the Bogan Shire Council administration.
