Second illegal tobacco premises butted out in Gilgandra

A second business in Gilgandra has been shut down as part of an ongoing crackdown on illegal tobacco sales, following a similar enforcement action at a different premises in the town late last year.

Acting on intelligence of high-volume sales of prohibited tobacco products, officers working on behalf of Gilgandra Shire Council, with support from the NSW Police Force, conducted a coordinated inspection on Monday, 9 February at a business premises on Miller Street, Gilgandra.

During the operation, investigators seized a quantity of prohibited tobacco, prohibited vape modules, packaged loose tobacco commonly known as ‘chop-chop’ and other related contraband.

All seized items are now in the custody of the authorities for further examination.

At the conclusion of the joint operation, an Emergency Stop Use order was issued to the employees present on site, as well as the registered owners of the premises, barring any further use or occupation of the building.

Council has confirmed the evidence is being reviewed, with consideration being given to laying charges against both the employees located on site and the owners of the business in relation to the alleged offences.

The February closure follows a separate enforcement action at a different premises in Gilgandra in December 2025, highlighting a continued focus on illegal tobacco retailing in the region.

One thing not welcomed to Gilgandra is illegal tobacco sales, with two different businesses issued with Emergency Stop Use orders in a space of less than three months.

On Thursday, 18 December 2025, officers from Gilgandra Shire Council, supported by the NSW Police Force and the NSW Health Department, carried out a coordinated inspection at a business on Warren Road, Gilgandra, also acting on intelligence of high-volume illegal tobacco sales.

That operation resulted in the seizure of prohibited tobacco, prohibited vape modules, chop-chop and digital electronic scales.

Investigators also discovered the premises were being used illegally as a principal place of residence, posing a serious risk to public health and safety.

An Emergency Stop Use order was issued following the December inspection, preventing further use or occupation of the premises.

Evidence from that matter remains under review, with charges also considered against employees and business owners.

Gilgandra Shire Council has reiterated its commitment to supporting NSW Police Force and NSW Health Department efforts to eradicate illegal tobacco retailing, warning that the unlawful sale and distribution of prohibited tobacco impacts local amenity and poses significant risks to community health.
