Narromine Tennis Club president Henry Buttsworth says a large jump in participation in the last year is due to its strong community and committee involvement.

The Club was recently awarded ‘Most Outstanding Growth Initiative’ by NSW Tennis at its 2025 Beyond Fire state awards.

‘’This award recognises innovation, commitment, or success to grow tennis participation or club membership and accessibility through a specific initiative or strategy," the award judges said.

"With Club membership up 800% in the last financial year alone."

Local MP Dugald Saunders is impressed with the sport’s development in Narromine.

"I recognised the Club's hard working Committee in Parliament a couple of weeks ago, and was pleased to present them with a copy of my Hansard statement when I was in town last week," he said.

Mr Buttsworth says the club has reached big heights with its community-friendly and social approach.

‘’It's an outstanding achievement going from 20 members to 186," he said.

"A new clubhouse and an influx of young people wanting to learn the game means the club is going from strength to strength.’’

He says the club has partnered with the Dubbo Tennis Academy so junior players can get pathways to bigger things.

Narromine’s A grade supplies players to the Western NSW competitions.

"Five of our players play in matches against Bathurst and Orange and it shows the strength of our local competition.’’

Social tennis is popular in the sports-mad town and he says working with the Indigenous Clontarf group is another reason for growth in Narromine.

‘’Our involvement with the local Public and High Schools and the Clontarf group has been going well so we are keen to continue with our involvement.’

"100 years and so on the club has never been going better.’’ Mr Buttsworth said.
