A tragic accident at Brewarrina over the weekend has claimed the lives of two truck drivers.
Emergency services were called to a bridge on the western side of Brewarrina at around 7pm on Saturday 19 February, after the two road trains collided head-on and caught fire.
The site was secured by police and the highway closed in both directions until their investigations at the scene were completed early on Sunday morning.
The fire at the crash scene on the Kamilaroi Highway took just over an hour to contain through the combined efforts of local and surrounding crews from Fire & Rescue NSW and the Rural Fire Service.
Fire & Rescue NSW reported that the crashed vehicles remained very hot and required ongoing efforts in the hours that followed to completely extinguish.
FRNSW liaised with representatives from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and worked to limit any contamination from the runoff of water used to fight the blaze.
NSW Police confirmed that both drivers were killed in the impact and neither was officially identified as at 4pm Sunday.
Officers from Central North Police District will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
