Nearly 100 kilometres of highway has been closed after a significant incident between Coonabarabran and Gilgandra.

The driver of a small sedan has died in a collision with a truck.

A number of diversions are in place after the accident.

Just before 10am today, Friday 12 September, NSW Ambulance paramedics responded to the scene of a collision between a truck and a car at the intersection of Hickeys Road and the Newell Highway - 26 kilometres southwest of Coonabarabran.

The Newell Highway was shut between the intersection with East Coonamble Road, near Gilgandra, and Coonabarabran Road, South of Coonabarabran.

The accident occurred between a semi-trailer and Volkswagon Golf.

The driver of the truck is understood to be uninjured.

Vehicles up to B-Doubles travelling between Gilgandra and Coonabarabran are advised to take the Castlereagh Highway to Mendooran, Coonabarabran Road, and then back on to the Newell Highway.
