More than 2000 customers are without power in the Narromine and Warren shires after storms swept through the Western Plains at around midday today (Wednesday 26 November)

At least one car has been hit by a falling tree in Narromine, where residents reported strong winds and lightning.

Another photo in the town shows a large sheet of tin had blown away and hung itself over a power line.

Damage to homes and buildings in Nevertire has also been reported.

"Normally when we lose trees and limbs, we get sustained rain and then have the big wind. The ground's already moist and the tree roots just let go," the resident said.

"But this was all wind. It was very little rain.

"Every street that you drive down, there's a tree down or limbs broken off."

The State Emergency Service (SES) also reported wind gusts up to 111km/h in Trangie at 12:01pm.

They say they have received over 1145 incidents statewide between midnight last night and 3:30pm today.

Storms have headed through NSW throughout the day, bringing heavy rain and hail and wreaking havoc on local communities.

Nevertire has been hit particularly hard with sheds, homes and commercial buildings unroofed and seriously damaged.

It follows a series of storms that have battered the region over the last couple of months.

Near the Come By Chance village, farmer Tom O'Brien lost half the roof on his house following strong winds on 17 October.

Since then, he says others in the area have experienced property and crop damage.

"It's just very irregular, isolated pockets of high winds and hail," he said.

He said conditions have been like that for at least the last two weeks.

He also said another farmer in the area lost a grain bunker tarp when it split during today's storm.

Nearby, David and Jane Keir's property 17 kilometres south of Come by Chance has now "been trashed" three times in separate storms, the latest hitting at around 4pm today.

"We lost a paddock of unharvested wheat in the first storm (17 October), but it didn't touch a paddock less than one kilometre away. All our wheat ended on the ground," Mrs Keir said.

It was a similar story on 15 November.

The wind that day lifted two outdoor heavy fridges and dropped them on their faces about ten metres away.

"We even found a brick in a tree," she said.

"We could see it coming, but then it just hit. It was only little hail but we've never seen wind like it.

"It was crazy, but it didn't last long."

Today's storm also saw hail and heavy winds.

"I thought that the house would go," she said.

"I'd say we had about 10mm of rain, and it was tiny hail about as big as your little fingernail but the wind was ridiculous.

"The first two storms came south from Come By Chance. This one came from the west, but it still got us.

"It tore one end of our grain shed.

"It just rips in and really gives you no warning."

An Essential Energy spokesperson said crews are working to repair the network where safe, including with specialist equipment and helicopters patrols to assess the damage.

"Outage numbers can fluctuate as the severe weather is still in progress and causing damage to the network," the spokesperson said.

"Due to a Total Fire Ban set by fire authorities, crews must fully inspect the powerlines before restoring power for bushfire prevention. This takes extra time, so please prepare for potential extended power outages.

"For information on how to prepare for a power outage, please visit Outage Tips on our website.

"Estimated times of power restoration are being updated on our website outages page as they become known. Please note, that some of the times may change with the ongoing weather conditions.

"Customers are reminded to keep at least eight metres away from fallen powerlines, power poles and damaged electricity equipment, or 150 metres away if any part of the electricity network is covered in flood waters.

"Always assume that these powerlines are live and very dangerous. If you see fallen powerlines, please report the location to Essential Energy on 13 20 80.

"If you’re a life support customer and require assistance, please call 000."

"Customers will receive an SMS when updates are known. We encourage customers to ensure that their mobile number is up to date with their energy retailer and that they have not opted out for SMS contact."

Essential Energy also reminds the region's residents of the high fire danger warnings across the state.

A fire on Breakaway Trail in the Macquarie Marshes Nature Reserve has been burning since yesterday afternoon and at 4pm today was reported to have burned 439 hectares.

The NSW RFS report is as being under control.
