Vote today! Lightning Ridge 2023 NSW Top Tourism Town Finalist Fossicking at Lightning Ridge is just one attraction for tourists and locals.

Lightning Ridge is no longer Walgett Shire's best kept secret, - it has been named a worthy finalist in the 2023 NSW Top Tourism Town Awards and voting closes at 5pm today!

There are 32 towns from across the state vying for the prestigious accolade across three categories. Small, but unique, Lightning Ridge is a finalist in the category for towns under 1500 residents.

Jenni Brammall, who has live in the Ridge for 25 years said she isn't at all surprised.

"The Lightning Ridge community is friendly, inclusive, diverse and welcoming," she said. "I came here for four weeks in 1998 and it immediately felt like home. I love the landscape and the community."

Ms Brammall, now CEO of the Australian Opal Centre, which is currently under construction said the town has so much to offer for visitors and locals.

"It's home to some of the most rare and spectacular gemstones and fossils that you could find anywhere in the world," Ms Brammall said. "The hunt for these precious things have attracted a unique community of hard workers and dreamers. The community spirit is Lightning Ridge is fantastic and the beautiful big skies and open spaces can’t be beaten."

Travellers Vicki and Glen who have been travelling Australia continuously since 2018 have certainly seen a lot of the nation but say Lightning Ridge is a favourite.

"We don’t really know why, but Lightning Ridge is a favourite town of ours We have travelled all of Australia, and we keep coming back to The Ridge. I think this was our fourth visit, maybe fifth? But we still love it and continually find something new," Vicki and Glen said. "There is something about The Ridge that draws you in. It might be opal fever? Who knows, but we caught the Lightning Ridge bug many years ago, and it never goes away."

NSW Tourism Industry Council Executive Director, Paula Martin said to become a finalist was an incredible effort for all towns.

"In order to be considered as a finalist for the Top Tourism Town award, entrants had to go through a rigorous and highly competitive process. Participants had to present outstanding editorial pieces, captivating itineraries, and compelling videos as part of their submission.” Ms Martin said.

Now it’s time for the public to cast their vote with voting open until 5pm Friday 12 May 2023 - that's today!

The winners will be announced at the Local Government NSW Destination & Visitor Economy Conference, on 30 May 2023.

So, what are you waiting for? Vote now so everyone knows just how great this part of the Western Plains is to visit.
