Walgett's IGA has been forced to run off a generator after a malicious fire knocked out power on Thursday morning 24 July.

Longtime worker Laura Donai said a man was spotted on security footage setting fire to the store's garbage bins on the property's south-western corner after 1am.

The fire spread to a nearby wooden power pole and damaged a transponder, which cut off their main power supply.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by around 2am.

Ms Donai said the store has continued to operate, relying on a generator, but has some restrictions in place.

"We're trying our best to have it open for everybody in the community, obviously, but this is putting a lot of pressure on our backup generator," she said.

"It cannot sustain continuous operation with all the fridges, freezers and cool rooms."

The store is currently waiting for an electrician to repair the damage and assure the operators that their main power supply is secure and meeting safety standards.

Ms Donai said the footage has been passed onto police, while maintenance is currently being carried out on the generator to help it keep up with demand.

The shop has also been forced to suspend the sale of perishables until further notice and operating hours have been altered.

"We understand the inconvenience this is causing our community and management here at IGA are doing everything they possibly can to get operations back to normal ASAP," Ms Donai said.

Local NSW Fire and Rescue crew also attended a separate nearby hedge fire around the same time near the corner of Fox and Neilly Street.

That fire was roughly two by two meters and extinguished in about five minutes.

It's not the first time the Walgett supermarket has been affected by fire.

In 2019, a blaze destroyed the supermarket building operations were not restored until a new store opened the following year.
