Walgett school burns

Two school buildings at Walgett's primary school have been destroyed by fire overnight.


Emergency services received reports about 11pm last night (Monday 14 August 2023), of a fire at the school on Warrena Street, Walgett.


Fire and Rescue NSW attended and located two buildings well alight. The fires were extinguished; however, both buildings were destroyed.



Officers from Central North Police District established a crime scene and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fires have commenced.


There were no reports of injuries.


The cause of the fire is yet to be determined but is believed to have been deliberately lit.


As inquiries continue, anyone with information in relation to this incident is urged to contact Walgett Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.


Students and families have been advised that the school will not be operational today and will be kept informed of alternative arrangements.
