Car defect leads to cannabis discoveryA driver flouting the law in Bourke has got more than he bargained for.

A man who caught the eye of police due to defects on a 'borrowed' vehicle has led a chase through the streets of Bourke and was later found at home - along with some nearby cannabis plants - notching up a number of charges.

About 8.30am yesterday, Wednesday 28 September, officers from Central North Police District attempted to stop a Holden Commodore on Wilson Street, Bourke, after checks revealed it was subject to a defect notice.

The Commodore failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated through several streets before the chase was terminated a short time later.

Following inquiries, the Commodore was soon located in the driveway of a home on Wortumertie Street.

A search of the area was conducted, where police located and seized six cannabis plants.

A 27-year-old man was arrested a short time later hiding in the bathroom of a home on the same street.

He was taken to Bourke Police Station and charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, never licensed person drive vehicle on road, use vehicle in contravention of minor defect notice and cultivate prohibited plant.

The man was given conditional bail to appear at Bourke Local Court on Thursday 6 October 2022.
