Work has finished on the overtaking lanes and safety upgrades on the Mitchell Highway between Dubbo and Narromine, as part of a $32 million investment by the former Nationals government.
Narromine Shire Council Mayor, Craig Davies said the trip to Dubbos was now a lot easier than it was previously.
"It's a fantastic outcome," Mr Davies said. "There has been three overtaking lanes added, making it five in total and the road has been widened in many places as well."
Work on the project started in January 2022, and included a range of safety improvements such as widening 11 kilometres of highway, installing rumble strips and safety barriers, and improving drainage and property access.
The project was a key commitment by Nationals Leader and Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders ahead of the 2019 election and he is understandably pleased at the completion of the project.
"It's fantastic for the people who use this stretch of road every day to get to and from work, along with those taking part in sporting activities, community events, or health appointments," Mr Saunders said.
Mr Davies said the Narromine Shire Council had no monetary input into the road upgrade but were thrilled the trip east has been made definitely easier for residents.
"It's quite a winding stretch," Mr Davies said. "There's a lot of heavy vehicles and road trains on that road and also a lot of stock trucks. If you get stuck behind them, you are flat out at only around 70 kilometres per hour.
"I've been told there's basically a 20 year guarantee with the surface so people, not only from Narromine but from other parts of western New South Wales, can look forward to a much easier track trip to Dubbo in the future."
According to Mr Saunders the Mitchell Highway upgrade has been one of the most talked-about projects for the Narromine area but the improvements came with a few issues.
"There were a few challenges along the way, including a couple of years of COVID and extremely wet weather, but I'm so pleased we now have the upgrades completed," he said. "The overtaking lanes have already been making an enormous difference to travel times and safety on the road. I hear it from regular users, and it's music to my ears."
The improvement in time and ease of travel was seconded by Mr Davies.
"They say it's taken six minutes off the trip but I'd say it's taken a heck of a lot more," he said. "You could be lines of 20 vehicles at stages, but now because there are so few blockages in that stretch there traffic is just so much freer and it's a very easy trip now."
"At the end of the day, it's a great outcome for everyone."
